    Devin’s College Tour

My 18-year-old son, Devin, and I are trekking around the country a bit this week, visiting 5 or 6 colleges that are currently at the top of our interest list.

I’m so proud of how Devin has really taken hold of this college search process, applying to many schools, applying for many scholarships, and putting his best foot forward in every way. So we both took off for a week so that we could drive 3,000 miles through a dozen states to visit some of those schools.

We’re starting with Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Next, there’s Albion College in Albion, Michigan. After that, it’s Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. Next is Lycoming College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Last is Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. We also hope to meet with some coaches from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, on the drive home, but that’s not confirmed yet.

Let me say this in the most open minded, non-judgmental way possible:

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT LET DEVIN GO TO LIBERTY!!!

All kidding aside, would you want any kid going to a school that doesn’t let College Democrats be an official student organization, while encouraging College Republicans? Would you want him going to a school that did the opposite, either? The kind of one sided, narrow minded, and (yes, I’ll say it) hateful attitude that pervades that place is bad news.

It’s a little like your time with Campus Crusade for Christ during college, though. It may have been a more conservative theological (and political) strain than you had to begin with–and definitely than you ended up with–but it didn’t hurt to have some of that in your background.

Truthfully, I’ve come to appreciate Liberty more than I thought I would. Christine is taking online classes there now–and though I disagree with a whole lot of what gets preached, I’m also pretty excited to find out that the scholarship in the theology department is more thorough than I would’ve thought it would be.
